Update to Network Status Alerts

May 5th, 2009 by admin

We found a the cause for a fairly important bug in our alerting system tonight revolving around false reporting of systems down.

Basically the system works by using nmap to scan specific ports on specific IP addresses to discover whether the ports are open or closed. If open, the service is considered up. If not, it is considered down. The flaw revolved around filtered ports. As they were not testing as closed, it was being considered as a service down.

We have modified the script and it is now operating normally.
